In case there was any doubt about which American automaker has a real shot at longevity, Ford recently announced that 60% of those who bought the Fusion this year were buyers new to Ford.

The Fusion’s new Ford buyers, of  ”conquest sales,” have been increasing steadily, up 6 percentage points from January of this year, according to a release, and 11 points from the 2009 calendar year. The latest numbers for the Fusion Hybrid, featuring a hybrid gas/electric engine, are even better, with 82% of those who purchased them in February new to the brand. The Ford Fusion comes in seven different models ranging in fuel efficiency from 18/27 MPG City/Hwy (on the V6) to 41/36 MPG City/Hwy (on the Hybrid).

“It’s extraordinary that a car could set sales records and continue to excel in an environment where overall industry sales in the midsize segment are down 19 percent from a year ago,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president of Marketing and Sales and Service, in a statement. What’s perhaps more extraordinary is that no American automaker, until now, has tried to capitalize on the growing market for fuel-efficient mid-sized cars.

Ford Motor Co. said today that it is on track to sell more hybrid vehicles in 2009 than it ever has before.

Through November, Ford said has sold nearly 31,000 hybrid vehicles, or 67% more than it sold last year in the United States while total industry sales have declined 11%.

Ford’s hybrid sales increase is primarily driven by the spring introduction Ford Fusion Hybrid midsize car.

Through November, Ford sold 13,998 Fusion hybrids, according to Autodata Corp.

However, Ford still has a long way to go before it catches hybrid market leader Toyota Motor Corp. Through November, Toyota has sold 127,907 Priuses, according to Autodata Corp.

Ford also introduced the Mercury Milan hybrid midsize car earlier this year and sells hybrid versions of its Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner SUVs.

Ford Motor Co. has outlined plans to invest as much as $500 million in Michigan to engineer and assemble battery packs for a new generation of electric vehicles and manufacture a new hybrid and plug-in hybrid here — if state lawmakers approve a request for tax credits it is submitting today in Lansing.

These moves would consolidate much of Ford’s electric vehicle research, development, engineering and manufacturing in the state, creating approximately 1,000 new jobs at the company.

“We think it has a great opportunity to help in the economic growth of Michigan,” said Nancy Gioia, director of Ford’s global electrification programs. “It promotes Michigan’s competitiveness.”

Ford’s announcement comes a day after General Motors Co. said it would invest $336 million to upgrade its Hamtramck plant to produce the Chevrolet Volt and the next-generation Malibu.

Ford, which was the first U.S. car maker to manufacture a hybrid, plans to begin production of a battery-powered commercial van next year, to be followed by a battery-powered version of its new Focus compact in 2011. The company also is readying a new generation of gasoline-hybrids.

It currently purchases battery packs for its hybrid vehicles from Delphi Corp., which assembles them in Mexico. But the automaker said battery engineering is a “core competency” that is too important to entrust to a supplier.

If the state does not approve tax credits for Ford, the automaker said it is considering other sites.

The new Ford Focus and other vehicles based on the global compact platform are slated to be produced at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne.

Ford said it has not decided where in Michigan the batteries would be assembled.

Ford will invest up to $500 million for its hybrid vehicle projects and create more than 1,000 new jobs in Michigan if state lawmakers expand an existing incentive program and approve $85 million in tax credits, according to the Detroit News.

If Ford’s needs are met, the company will go ahead with plans to design and assemble battery packs for a new generation of hybrid vehicles in Michigan, and possibly even make a new hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicle based on the Ford Focus platform it plans to launch in Detroit in January, The Detroit News reports.

Last year, Michigan lawmakers authorized tax credits for the assemblage of high-capacity lithium-ion battery packs, but Ford is now requesting them to expand the incentives to include lower-capacity batteries used in hybrid vehicles.

Ford is specifically requesting $85 million in tax credits from the program through 2014, and on top of that, an additional $35 million beyond 2014 if the lithium-ion cells for the battery packs are made in Michigan, the Detroit News reports.

Currently auto-parts supplier Delphi assembles the battery pack for Ford’s current hybrid vehicles in Mexico according to Reuters. Ford says the change it is trying to make is in no way a reflection of Delphi’s performance. Rather, it represents Ford’s desire to set itself apart from competitors through battery development.

Ford is the only large U.S. automaker not to reorganize under a government-funded bankruptcy this year. Ford captured a larger market share in November than a year ago and is getting ready to ramp up its vehicle production in North America by more than a half for the first quarter of 2010.

Back at it again, the Ford Fusion Hybrid has won yet another award.  Add this new one to the list which includes the vehicles recent selection as Car and Driver’s 10 Best.  The newest award presented to the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid is the 2010 Earth, Wind, & Power Award for green car of the year.

The Fusion was chosen for the award for numerous reasons.  Ford’s ability to offer a hybrid vehicle for sale nationwide at a base price of just $27,625 is one reason as is the Fusion’s gas mileage ratings of 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.  The Fusion Hybrid is also the first American hybrid able to fully move under electric power alone.  Yes, the Escape Hybrid can also move under electric power, but it losses that ability with the A/C on making it partially able to move under electric power.

As has been stated before, the Fusion Hybrid ins its share of awards not for being a hybrid, but for being an all around vehicle.  It offers sporty driving characteristics, room for five, high quality materials, good gas mileage, and does so in a familiar package that buyers like.

For Ford, few competitors exist that can challenge the Fusion Hybrid.  Competition comes from the Nissan Altima Hybrid which is only available in select states, the Toyota Camry hybrid, which lacks the fun to drive quotient of the Fusion, and possibly the Toyota Prius, which lacks mainstream appeal due to its dedicated hybrid design and lacks the performance aspect that the Fusion has.

Congrats to Ford once again for its efforts on the Ford Fusion Hybrid.

I have become what I most hate. As the traffic light turns green on Manhattan’s Park Avenue I feather the gas pedal, softly rolling forward. Horns blare and yellow cabs swirl round my blue Ford like a river divided by a rock.

I coast the Fusion Hybrid to the next light, ignoring the invective directed at me, the maddeningly slow driver clogging up traffic.

But damn I’m getting good gas mileage.

If sports-car lovers fixate over Nurburgring lap times and power-to-weight ratios, there’s an equally obsessive eco-green set who argue over consumption-over-distance ratios and the etiquette of hypermiling — the practice of driving to maximize fuel economy.

The latter group has another midsize hybrid to obsess about, and this time it’s from a U.S. automaker. Ford’s Fusion Hybrid gets Environmental Protection Agency estimates of 41 miles per gallon in the city and 36 on the highway.

But it can achieve better than that — way better — driven “correctly.” Ford advertises that the 17.5-gallon tank will last you for 700 miles in the city, yet a Ford team wrangled 1,445 miles in a test — more than 80 mpg. The problem is that the driving style needed to achieve those numbers will raise the blood pressure of your fellow road users.

The midsize sedan seats five and starts at $27,270, a sizable premium over the base $19,270 Fusion. A $1,700 Federal hybrid tax credit is good until Sept. 30.

Braking Energy

Ford’s other available hybrid is the $29,645 Escape Hybrid SUV, which also seats five and gets 34 city, 31 highway. There are also Mercury versions of the Fusion and Escape, the Milan Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid. In all, Ford has upped its hybrid production to 50,000 units for 2009.

The Fusion Hybrid has a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor for combined power of 191 horses. Ford says the car can operate up to 47 mph in electric mode. Like the Toyota Prius, it uses nickel-metal-hydride batteries and a regenerative brake system to recapture energy.

As for looks and design, except for the shiny three-tiered grill and the honeycombed taillights, it has about as much style as knit sweaters. From the lackluster rims, which look like they’re made of plastic, to the generic sedan shape, the Fusion has no flash whatsoever. Both the rear seats and the trunk are cramped as the battery pack is stored back there.

The economical aesthetic extends to the interior. You like your plastic garnished with cheap-looking cloth? You’re in luck. Fortunately, heated and leather-trimmed seats are available, as is Ford’s fine SYNC infotainment system.

Digital Display

Engineers spent lots of time on the instrument cluster, coined SmartGauge. The digital display flashes fancifully when you turn the car on, showing a speedometer flanked by data on the operation of the hybrid systems and real-time mileage.

How much information you get is up to you. There are four modes, from basic “inform,” giving only fuel and battery charge levels, to “empower,” which even tells you how much energy the air conditioning is sucking.

The goal is to use the readings to maximize your driving efficiency. It definitely works, though it can be as distracting as a video game.

As with other hybrid and electric cars, there’s no start-up noise when you switch the Fusion on, and the continuous variable transmission means there’s no shifting. The transitions between gas and electric power are mostly seamless.

Slow Start

The Fusion has a tight turning radius and though you won’t mistake the steering or suspension for a German-made car, they are acceptable. Power is adequate. It’s no less fun to drive than a Toyota Camry.

Which brings us to those driving techniques that make you public enemy number one. The best mileage is achieved when the electric motor is on, and the best way to do that is to avoid stopping or, when you must, to start off again very slowly.

This is, of course, the opposite of New York City driving etiquette — mashing on the gas to surge through gaps and slamming on brakes at stoplights. Mincing through traffic instead put me in real-time mpg of 60.

The art of hypermiling is controversial as it can include illegal maneuvers such as rolling through stop signs and drafting, or following another vehicle closely to reduce wind resistance. Ford says the team who got 80 mpg did not do that.

Either way, you have to keep the speed down, often to far slower than the flow of traffic. Hitting a parkway, I drive a steady 55 miles per hour and get 50 mpg. Nice. Eyes on the SmartGauge, I slow down. At 49 mph an octogenarian in an Oldsmobile blows by, honking her horn. Embarrassing, but I’m in the 60-mpg range.

I kick the air conditioning up to full blast and the SmartGauge scolds me for sucking lots of extra energy. I quickly stab it off, feeling sheepish.

In fact, I feel a bit giddy. Green can be fun. I wonder how long it takes for this feeling to fade. I’m guessing the first time you’re late for work.

An e-mail making the rounds on the Internet this morning that says Ford’s offering 500 copies of its new Fusion hybrid for $15,000 each — almost 50% below list — is a hoax, the automaker said.

Employing the sort of fractured English that has become a familiar feature of certain types of Internet scams, the e-mail says:

“Due to the World Economy Recession, Ford Motor Company, Inc undergo a statistic fall in Sales and result in a drastic financial crisis this last season. The United States Government has given us the opportunity to bounce back on our feet, but unfortunately we have not achieved the fund necessary.

We decided to pull the sales of 500 cars at a very low price for us to aquire the capital needed to bounce back in business and to use this medium to increase the scale of our valued customers.”

The e-mail is signed “Ford Sales Manager Gary Settles” in Dearborn, Mich., where Ford has its headquarters.

“Unfortunately, the offer is not legitimate and the e-mail is a hoax,” Ford said in a statement. “Also, the sales manager listed in the e-mail is not a company employee.

“Ford recommends that people delete the e-mail and any attachments.”

A spokesman for Ford said the company’s IT department is looking into the matter and added that “we’re getting the word out to dealers as soon as we can that this is not a real offer.”

And for the record, the base MSRP for the 2010 Fusion hybrid is $27,270.

While the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid is known as the most fuel-efficient midsize car on the market, it has several features for drivers to interact from its dashboard. Ford Motor Company has provided a data screen which can inform the driver on things like its current fuel level and battery charge status. The electric mode provides the Ford car a driving range of up to 700 miles on a single tank of gas.

The interior and seats are one of the first things you’ll notice about this vehicle. Ford made a revision to the seat contour which now offers more side support with smoother bolsters and comfort. The seats also feature contrasting stitching and leather inserts to give the automobile more attitude.

Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) comes equipped in the Fusion. The system is designed to improve driving dynamics of the car while delivering greater fuel economy because the steering system is operated by the electrical system rather than the engine. In addition to improvements in the 2010 Fusion’s steering, handling and improved brake pedal feel, the automobile also reduced wind noise and road noise.

Overall, the Ford Fusion is a great hybrid car which will save money and time at the pump.

The Minnesota Army National Guard has an eco-friendly mission—they’re the first in the National Guard and the first military department in the state to go ‘green’ on the road.

On Thursday, Sgt. Major David Eustice took a ride on a new 2010 Ford Fusion parked outside of the recruitment headquarters in Roseville.

He’s in one of 23 new hybrids the Minnesota Army National Guard bought in the past few weeks.

“We love them. It’s a great vehicle. We were concerned how it would work, but it’s a great vehicle, gas mileage is fantastic,” Eustice said.

These two cars may look the same, but their older fleet vehicles only got about 23 miles to the gallon, whereas the new hybrid gets 40.

“We made a conscious decision using tax payer money to put money into technology rather than buying more gas,” Eustice explained.

The hybrid costs $3,000 more than what they used to pay. But since the new cars don’t need as much gas, they’ll break even in three years.

Eustice tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they were concerned about their dependence on foreign energy and allowing fewer pollutants in the air—their new hybrids will reduce carbon emissions by 7.5 percent.

The Minnesota Army National Guard say they’re proud to set an example for all military and government agencies.

There has been a lot of confusion regarding the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid auto tax credit. Ford vehicles which use hybrid technologies including Ford Fusion, Escape, Mercury Milan, and Mercury Mariner all qualify for a $1,700 auto tax credit. The tax benefit will also depend on your individual tax circumstances.

The original government incentive was $7,500, which dropped down to $3,400 if you purchased the Fusion before April 1, 2009. Today the tax incentive is $1,700, but you may want to consult with your tax advisor or the IRS to confirm the amount of credit that you can claim. The auto credits are phasing out this year, but there might be additional IRS incentives in the future.

Here’s how the whole thing works today regarding these benefits and how much you really get back. If you make your purchase before October 1, 2009, you will receive a $1,700 tax credit. However, this is where the confusion begins.

If you purchase the Fusion before April 1, 2010, your tax credit will be $850. After that date, there are no auto tax credits from the IRS. Purchasing your Hybrid within the allotted timetable is key to qualify for the tax credit.

Some auto Web sites are still promoting a $7,500 tax credit. This is outdated information relating to a credit that already expired. Again, to maximum your full credit, you should talk directly with the IRS or your tax advisor.

We’re all used to American automakers offering huge factory incentives – and losing lots of profit in the process – but an e-mail this week claiming Ford was offering its new 2010 Fusion Hybrid for $11,700 off the current sticker was rather suspicious. (If anyone believed this, I’ve got some hot stock from Chrysler to sell you).

The e-mail’s poor English grammar looks straight off the translated website of any Chinese manufacturer, but according to the Detroit Free Press, the scheme to collect “installments through the bank” is similar to Nigerian banking scams from a few years back. The culprit, Ford says, is likely from Europe. Making this scam truly international was the signature from “Gary Settles, Ford Sales Manager,” who according to Autoblog is actually the sales manager of a Kentucky Ford dealership and not from Dearborn headquarters.

“Per our statement on the media site, the e-mail sender does not represent Ford and no such program exists,” wrote Ford spokesman Steve Kinkade in an e-mail to the Globe.

The real hybrid price war is between the Insight and Prius, with Toyota last month cutting the base price of its 2010 Prius to $21,000 after Honda stole the limelight with its cheaper Insight.

Something remarkable is happening at the Ford Motor Company as it sets out to prove the fuel efficiency of their 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid cars. Consequently, the journey has taken the team for a drive of more than 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas. The road trip is driven by NASCAR driver Carl Edwards.

“At 9:08 a.m. this morning, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid team hit the 1,000-mile mark on a single tank of gas, and is continuing its ultimate fuel-efficiency challenge with nearly one-third of a tank of fuel remaining,” a Ford spokesman said.

While the American automakers are struggling with the downward economy, Ford is determined to prove that their eco-friendly automobiles can save car owners money at the pump. The electric automobile is a mid-sized sedan which is delivering more than 80 miles per gallon over the course of 47 hours. The vehicle is so eco-friendly that the seat cushions use a bio-based polyurethane foam derived from the oils of various plant seeds.

The hybrid crew used fuel efficiency technics to reach 80 MPG during the road challenge.

The crew achieved 80 miles per gallon by using a few technics. For example, the team maintained even throttle pressure when slowing down while braking smoothly. The team coasted up to red lights and avoided stop signs which waste fuel and brake wear. The vehicle also has the kinetic forward motion when climbing hills in an effort to minimize excessive workload to the engine.

The crew also hasn’t used the heater or the air conditioning which has reduced the load on the engine. Avoiding bumps and potholes can reduce momentum for the vehicle. Moreover, the team closed the windows at high speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag.
Ford Fusion Hybrid $1,700 Tax Credit

Customers can get a $1,700 tax credit when they buy a hybrid car before October 1, 2009. Buyers of a new 2010 Fusion or Mercury Milan Hybrid will qualify for the tax credit. The tax credit amounts are reduced by 50 percent beginning in the second quarter of 2009 and by an additional 25 percent beginning in the fourth quarter of 2009.

It is the highest credit amount ever offered for eco-friendly cars.

Back when Ford only cared about the big profits available in monster SUVs and pickup trucks, Toyota began rolling out gas-electric hybrids and built a reputation as the Earth-friendly car maker. Now with more than a million Toyota Prius models sold, Ford is getting serious about its hybrids with an advanced second-generation powertrain.

Knowing that Toyota basically owns the segment today, Ford has to come up with some technology demonstrations (i.e. publicity stunts) to show what their hybrids can do. Last week, a team of specially trained drivers went to see how far they could go on a single tank of gas in a 2010 v.

They drove all around Washington, D.C. until the tank ran dry — after a little more than 69 hours, they had covered 1,445.7 miles (about 2,300 km) averaging an amazing 81.5 mpg (about 2.88 litres/100 km). These were specially trained drivers, but the Fusion Hybrid was a stock model right off the showroom floor. The drivers, called hypermilers, were expert at gradual acceleration and smooth stops and averaged a little over 30 km/h for the whole trip, but this hybrid can do 75 km/h in pure electric mode.

The point was made and Ford now claims the Fusion Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient mid-size car in North America. Expect a similar stunt from Toyota soon. Jim Buvalic is a hybrid transmission systems engineer at Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn, Mich., who worked on the development of the Fusion Hybrid.

Vaughan: As an engineer how do you go after the problem of going farther on less fuel?

Buvalic: It’s a total systems approach that we take.

We look at the power losses throughout the vehicle and we determine how to eliminate those losses. We’re after any losses that don’t propel the vehicle.

We measure parasitic losses — it could be aerodynamics, it could be engine losses like pumping losses — the Atkinson engine helps eliminate pumping losses.

There’s rolling resistance, there’s braking, there’s heating and air conditioning.

You have to go after all of it.

Where do you get the biggest return?

Regenerative braking, of course.

The regenerative brakes are actually the element that gives us by far the biggest boost in fuel economy out of all the functions. Regenerative brakes, percentage-wise, gives us the most.

But there’s strategy in the transmission, there’s strategy in the engine. That’s the most fascinating part.

The vehicle systems controls and calibrators are at the end of the process and they make the final adjustments to optimize everything.

It’s all software, calibration and code.

Why didn’t you make this hybrid a plug-in?

That’s coming in 2012.

I know that in the aftermarket there are people doing it now in California. But that would give a very limited range.

You don’t seem to like the idea of someone messing with your hybrid.

I think the coolest thing in our hybrid is the calibration that happens at the highest level and being able to take all the inputs, all the levers that are available and try to maximize them for fuel economy.

That’s the coolest thing. The calibrators who do that work are phenomenal and do a great job.

The hypermilers can get amazing fuel economy out of this hybrid, but who wants to drive all day at 30 km/h. So you’ve put these amazingly complex LCD screens on the dash that measure all sorts of different things to coach the average driver to be more efficient. Is this information overload?

No, because it has four different settings to give you the level of information that you want to use.

Well, the simplest one seems to be that thing that grows leaves — a vibrant efficiency forest, whatever that is. If you’re putting up more green leaves, you’re driving more efficiently.

Yeah, my eight-year-old son criticizes my driving from the back seat if I’m not showing enough green leaves.

But he prefers to see the bar graphs and the actual numbers.
