tesla-model-sTesla claims 520 customers placed $5000 refundable reserves on the recently revealed Model S sedan. Tesla plans the model Model S to seat seven, reach 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, and travel 300 miles per charge. The base model comes with a 160-mile-range battery pack and optional 230 mile and 300 mile packs are available.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk plans for a $57,400 base price and for the Model S to qualify for a plug-in hybrid tax rebate. The rebate ranges from $2500 to $7500, based on the capacity of the batteries, and is available for the first 250,000 vehicles sold. The rebates began in January.

Tesla plans to begin production in late 2011 and to open stores in Chicago, London, New York, Miami, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and Munich this year. Tesla also plans to build a factory that can actually produce the vehicle with aid from a (planned) $350 million loan from the Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program. The location of the factory, according to Tesla, is in the planning stages.
