Orders for Honda Motor Co’s Insight ultra fuel-efficient hybrid hatchback have topped 10,000 units even though only 10 days have elapsed since it debuted in Japanese showrooms on Feb. 6, the carmaker said Monday. The figure is more than double the monthly sales goal set for the five-door Insight, Honda said.
The environmentally friendly Insight ‘‘had a buoyant marketing start,’’ although Honda and other automakers have been hit by the global economic woes, a Honda official said. The base grade model of the Insight retails for 1,890,000 yen, compared with 2,331,000 yen for the base grade model of Toyota Motor Corp.’s Prius hybrid hatchback. Honda said the Insight had landed advance orders for 5,000 units by Feb 5, when Honda took the wraps off the hybrid at a high-profile news conference.
