California ranks No. 1 for new hybrid purchases, according to a report by the Travelers Cos. Inc. and the Polk Center for Automotive Studies.
For the year to date through May, 39,830 new hybrids were registered in California, almost five times as many as in Florida, the next closest state with 8,810 registrations. New York, Texas and Illinois rounded out the top five states.
The list of the top five cities for hybrid registration was also dominated by California, with Los Angeles and San Francisco taking the top two spots with a combined 28,793 registrations. New York, Washington, D.C., and Chicago followed.
The study found that the majority of responding hybrid owners — 70 percent– bought their cars to take advantage of tax breaks and due to high gas prices. Twenty-one percent said environmental concerns prompted them to buy hybrids, while nine percent said they bought hybrids because they support new technologies.
